You know that scenario where it is already some time between 9 pm or later and you can not just help but want to eat something. Perhaps you were out partying late with friends or working late, regardless for one reason or another you find yourself up late at night. We have all been there, dreaming up ice cream or something else just to satisfy the craving.
Hold your horses before you break the bank or find yourself at the end of a tub of ice cream. Personally, I believe ice cream is not off limits when you are on the road to weight loss but in this scenario where your tummy is on a warpath for anything, the chances of you been able to control yourself and have just one scoop of that deliciousness are slim to none. Hey, that is one person’s opinion, perhaps you have the self-control of Edward Cullen(Twilight; yes I went there, haha).
Okay, now for some true talk, here is a list of 5 cheap healthy late night snacks for weight loss to keep your body and your purse/wallet on track.
1. Air or Stove Popcorn
Popcorn is the perfect go to snack. It is rich in vitamins and minerals, I know hard to believe. Let me break it down so you understand this amazing kernel more.
As long as you are reaching for the health version of this snack meaning the corn kernels that require you to make yourself, not the theater or ready made ones in the nuts and popcorn aisle then you are good. Also this costs anywhere from $4-$9/kg, that is a lot of popcorn and savings.
Here are a few benefits you get:
- It is whole grain hence high in dietary fiber
- It is low in calories; 3 cups = approximately 110 calories
- It is rich in antioxidants; which can help fight eye degeneration, heart diseases.
Here’s a quick recipe for healthy popcorn:
- 3 tbsp of coconut/olive oil
- 1/2 cup of corn kernels
- 1/2 tsp of salt
- Add oil and kernels to a large lidded pot.
- Cook over medium heat for approximately 3 minutes or until popping sounds slow to a few seconds apart.
- Remove pot from stove.
- Season with salt.
2. Apple Slices with Peanut/Almond Butter
This might seem like a weird combination for those that have never tried it but trust me, they are so good I dare you not to want more. We have all heard the saying ” an apple a day keeps the doctor away”, perhaps peanut butter had not been discovered when that saying originated.
Apples on their own are a great source of vitamins, rich in antioxidants and also believed to help improve our neurological health(hey I am up for having a brain like Bradley Cooper’s character in ” Limitless”)
Peanut Butter/ Almond Butter are a great source of protein and good fats. I am talking about the organic kind that literally contains just peanuts or just almond. None of that Kraft PB/ or other hydrogenated fat loaded business, please. I can go on about how terrible those are for you, perhaps in a different post.
3. Greek Yogurt with Granola
Yes, this is a breakfast but who says it cannot be dessert too! This is the best alternative when your brain refuses to give up the ice cream. Greek Yogurt contains a lot of protein, I recommended reading the label when you buy it and pick a Greek yogurt brand with a protein serving of at least 10 grams with very little sugar.
Also in this case the granola will help provide added sweetness, some much needed fiber and carbs, yes, carbs is not the enemy and all you need a few sprinkle of granola in moderation.
If you have any fruit in your fridge add in to the mix, does not hurt and pushes away the ice cream craving.
Kiwis are so underrated, this fruit is delicious and easy to eat. They also super low in calories, 2 peeled kiwis provide you with 5 grams of fiber at just 93 calories of your daily dietary requirement. They are a natural source of serotonin which is a neurotransmitter that helps us relax, feel happier, be more focused and curb appetite.
- They are a good addition to smoothies
- They are excellent in tropical fruit salad recipes
- They can be enjoyed diced with a little honey if you want a sweet treat
Oh snap! Sign me up! Besides they tend to come in a pack at the grocery store, you can also add them to your breakfast if you want, it is a win-win.
Yum! That sums up Edamame. If you have never tried this delicious legume, my assignment for you is to go to the nearest grocery store close to you and stock up on them because it will most likely be love at first bite.
Edamame are basically immature soybeans, so they are a natural source of protein. They provide vital vitamins like iron, folate and manganese. They also suitable for people with diabetes because they do not excessively raise blood sugar.
- They are best enjoyed with a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
- They can also be pureed and used in place of avocado on toast.
For my Costco shoppers, they carry a massive box of these that require you to prepare in the microwave for a few minutes. If you do not shop at Costco, you can find them in the frozen veggies aisle, just follow the instructions on the pack. Personally, I prefer to buy them with the shell, I enjoy working to coax them out of their shell. There are shelled and unshelled ones, pick whichever suits you.
The Bottom Line
Choosing to be healthier and taking extra care to feed our bodies what it truly desires is not an easy feat. Cravings are not a terrible thing neither is giving in to them on those days when we just can not fight them as long as we stock up on healthy late night snacks for weight loss or management.
